Girls and Cycling

So proud of these fierce little girls, we told them today that they were big enough to cycle with the family on the sidewalk, through the green corridor, to the train tracks. They can’t always reach the brakes, nor hold the handlebars steady, and their feet barely touch the floor- I could even feel our helper aunties’ anxiety as she pushed them off and stood rooted, waving goodbye.

They pedaled for all they were worth for 3.5km to catch up to their brothers, at one point Rowan turned to me and called out “I’m trying hard, Mama!” and she jumped around in joy, wriggling with pleasure when we clapped her as she sailed, flushed and drenched, back through our gate. Made me want to cry though, when I realized Pezzy’s beloved dragon helmet, bought just after the girls were born, now fits them.
