Chatsworth House, Youlgreave and Duke of Derbyshire

Youlgreave is round the corner from Bakewell and the magnificent Chatsworth House, the seat of the Duke of Derbyshire (as Oliver told me, definitely not one of those left off Charles III’s coronation guest list!). I did not realize it was Pemberley, but it really does rise spectacularly to meet you from the dales and definitely one worth selling your daughter and dignity for. We only managed the farmyard and adventure park within, so my new aim is to come back with a weekend for the house and art collection. It is one of the best run heritage trusts I’ve seen- good food and spectacular gardens.

We liked it so much we bought pizzas from the very good Woodyard restaurant in Bakewell (Chinese takeaway in the village is run by a man from Ipoh and the fish and chip shop by a Thai lady) in the evening and drove back to the estate to wade in the streams.

Funny pic of the day- the moment Rowan, initially fearful but then FOMO, tripped and fell in. The most gratifying part of travel is watching the girls, Covid babies, grapple with new experiences.
